Axel
âTake it back,â I ordered as I held Tage in a headlock.
âWhat?â He forced out with a grin. âThat youâre getting fat?â
âI can still kick your ass.â I rubbed my knuckles against his hair, which was the same dirty blond shade as mine.
âMaybe here,â he scoffed, but still couldnât break free. âBut not on the ice. Hate to say it big brother, but this American luxury is making you soft.â
âHey, hey!â Langley called out as she walked into the living room, dodging piles of opened Christmas presents and wrapping paper. âDonât kill your brother, Axel. I canât spin the PR on that.â
âYouâre lucky she likes you,â I growled playfully, but let my brother go.
âEnglish, please. Itâs not nice to leave me out of the conversation,â Langley said with a grin as she folded herself onto the couch next to me.
Tage rolled to the ground, then scurried to the heavy armchair heâd claimed as his own when he got here a week ago. âSee? A few months ago you would have caught me. Marriage is making you soft, too.â Two dimples popped in his cheeks, and I shook my head. âAnd by soft,â he gestured to his belly, âI mean around the middle.â
He was met with a pillow in the face, courtesy of my wife.
âLay off, Tage.â She picked up the hem of my shirt, examining my abs. âYum, just as perfect as ever.â
âYou two are sickening,â he rolled his eyes but smiled.
âBe quiet and open your last present.â I leaned back against the couch and draped my arm over Langley, tucking her into my side. It was hard to believe the perfection of these last couple of months. She hadnât once mentioned the divorce, or even that we were on a timeline.
Maybe she was starting to come around to my way of thinking: who needed a divorce when we were this happy? Fuck the contract. This could be our forever.
âThereâs another present?â Tageâs blue eyes popped wide, and he looked so much like our mother in that moment that my breath failed.
âCheck behind your seat,â Langley suggested, snuggling into my chest.
She had one more present, too, but it would have to wait until after I took Tage to the airport in a few hours.
My heart sank. A few short hours were all I had left with him.
He scrambled over the top of the chair, leaning over so far I was sure Iâd be making my excuses to his coach when I returned him broken. He was only eleven years younger than me, but I suddenly felt every single one of those years.
âYou know I only brought you the one present,â Tage said over the medium-sized box in his lap.
âHaving yet another jersey with Nyström on it was a special treat.â I layered the sarcasm thick.
âHey, not one with my number from my team!â
âSo easy to rile,â I teased. âIn all seriousness, itâs my favorite present. I couldnât be prouder of you, Tage.â
His mouth pressed into a thin line, and red crept up his neck, but he nodded.
